Nykaa Matte to Last Lipsticks – Worth the hype?

Nykaa Matte to Last Lipsticks – Worth the hype?

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve seen and heard about Nykaa launching their ‘Matte to last’ liquid lipsticks!

The launch process was very interesting, new and interactive, something we rarely get to experience especially with an Indian brand!

We got to choose the shades, the undertones, the applicator and the packaging!

So the hype was real!!

Being a consumer I was totally invested and eagerly awaiting the launch of these lipsticks.

Over the years, Nykaa has become an integral part of shopping beauty and skincare, because they have always delivered the most honest and genuine products!

But when it comes to their in house brand, there was something that always held me back!

I saw the reviews and the products seemed interesting but there was never that ultimate push factor that made you make the final transaction!

All that changed after their marketing strategy with the liquid lipsticks ! I was game mostly because by now some how I was convinced that this brand will not disappoint me!

What next?

Two Nudes and Two Reds

Well, I finally took the leap and bought four of these liquid lipsticks!

As you can see I bought colours that can be used during the day and night!

In all my lip swatches I haven’t applied any filter or makeup apart from the lipstick to give as genuine colour resemblance as possible.

Bombae :

Mauve/Pink/Brown

I will be honest, I got this shade because I felt obligated to buy it as I live near Mumbai.

At first I didn’t like it because it seemed pretty brown when I swatched on my hand but after applying I feel like I can pull this shade off.

  •  Pigmentation is good (one swipe application)
  • Formula is light weight, mousse like texture not too drying.
  • Transfer proof – yes it is but only after drying completely
  • Drying time – Around 6-7 minutes
  • Wear test results – stays put for 6-7 hours with regular intervals of eating/drinking

You can see the colour clearly here. There is a slight floral smell but nothing too overpowering.

I feel this shade will suit fair to medium skin tones. People with darker skin tones can try it but it may look patchy.

Dilli

Pink with coral undertones

I was most excited about this shade.

But my expectations were let down because you need to make this shade work.

For Indian skin tones there are very few pink warm toned lipsticks at an affordable price and when it comes to liquid lipsticks it’s all the more difficult.

I think maybe it’s difficult to formulate these shades, that’s why a lot of companies don’t make it.

  •  Pigmentation is not that great (requires two swipes but buildable)
  • Formula is light weight, mousse like texture not too drying.
  • Transfer proof – not completely transfer proof but doesn’t wear off completely
  • Drying time – Around 6-7 minutes
  • Wear test – stays put for 4-5 hours with regular intervals of eating/drinking leaves a stain after.

The good part about this lipstick is that unless someone gets really close to your lips they will not notice the patchiness and it looks pretty.

(Compare the above two pictures for reference)

This shade will look good on most skin tones but you have to make it work.

Guwa-hottie

Burnt orange/brick red

This colour was amongst the pleasant surprises! It is mix of a burnt coral and a brick red colour. Depending upon your skin undertone, it will show up as more orange or red.

I feel a lot of medium to dark skin tones can pass this colour off as an everyday wear colour.

  •  Pigmentation is really good, got this payoff in one swipe
  • Formula is light weight, mousse like texture not too drying.
  • Transfer proof – not completely transfer proof or smudge proof but manageable
  • Drying time – Around 5-6 minutes.
  • Wear test – stays put for 6-7 hours (even more) with regular intervals of eating/drinking leaves a stain after.

I really like this shade, initially I thought it would be similar to MAC Cosmetics ‘Chilli’ but it is quiet different.

It is much darker in such a way that it will work for all skin tones. I am personally very happy with this lipstick.

 Mishti

Blue based red/neon pink tones

So I have a soft spot for reds, and especially for blue based reds!

I feel these lip shades have the power to bring together any type of look.

You can just apply a red lipstick and it will instantly brighten up your face, works best for those minimalist make up looks!

  •  Pigmentation is good but only if you shake the lipstick ( I know it’s weird but trust me there’s something to it)
  • Formula is light weight, a bit more watery than the other shades that’s why the shaking the lipstick helps.
  • Transfer proof – not transfer proof even after drying completely.
  • Drying time – Around 6-7 minutes.
  • Wear test – stays put for 4-5 hours with regular intervals of eating/drinking leaves a stain after.

This lipstick is going to suit all skin tones.

It is a very nice combination of blue based red and neon pink. I honestly haven’t seen combination like this.

This type of red is my weakness, I will do a comparison with other blue based reds if you want me to. Let me know in the comments below!

So in conclusion these are good lipsticks for the price point.

But compared to the other lipsticks in the same price range e.g. the sugar cosmetics smudge me not lipsticks, nyx soft matte lip creams and pac retro matte lipgloss they aren’t better but very similar.

Would I repurchase this product?

If I don’t find shades similar to Guwa-hatti I will repurchase it, other shades I’m not sure!
